Three Men Detained While Police Seek Public Assistance

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood

Yearwood declined to provide information on the persons in custody, but Police sources tell us one of the detained men is related to a Police Officer, which could explain the uniforms. If and when those men are positively identified, charged and arraigned, the Police Department will call off the alert. But if the men in custody are not the culprits, or if they are but manage to elude justice, Yearwood says the general public and particularly security guards should remain vigilant and above all, stay safe.

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood, Public Relations Officer, Eastern Division North

“One of them is wearing a black peaked cap, a regular cap which would resemble something like a baseball cap. Our Police cap comes with a shiny peak and it’s more like a hat than a cap. One of these persons has been described as wearing a dark blue jacket. We do have a windbreaker that our officers use in cold weather, but we can assure you that it would be strange for an officer to be in a jacket in these hot days. There are a lot of things with their physical appearance and approach. The first question being asked about your firearm should raise your eyebrow. Why would a Police Officer want to know if a security guard is carrying a firearm? There are several telltale things to raise an alert. But at the same time if these persons are brandishing firearms then you have to also put your safety first. There is no sense in you trying to be rebellious. Try not to aggravate a situation that would compromise your safety or your partner’s safety. And immediately after these persons leave you…I know that almost everybody in Belize has a cellphone. Call 911 – don’t try to contact your work supervisor. Your work supervisor will come and check on your safety. But it is important for us to try to get the Police on their trail. Maybe you can still find them in the area.”
