Jamaica to Hold Elections This Week

Elections will be held in Jamaica this Thursday where the Jamaica Labour Party led by Opposition Leader Andrew Holness is going up against Prime Minister Portia Simpson of the People’s National Party. Sixty constituencies are up for grabs in a battle that observers say may be too close to call. Today the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) announced it will be deploying an observer mission to the island to monitor the elections. Head of the mission is Josephine Tamai, Chief Elections Officer, of the Elections and Boundaries Department, here in Belize. Representatives from Barbados, The Bahamas, Dominica, Saint Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis,   St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago also form part of the team. The CARICOM Electoral Observer Mission will meet with Jamaican electoral officials, leaders of political parties and other stakeholders.  And on Thursday, the Mission will monitor the electoral process including the opening and closing of the Poll, the voting process and the counting of the ballots. A report will be issued thereafter.
