Bar President Comments on Formation of Another Legal Fraternity

Jacqueline Marshalleck

In September 2014 Government moved legislation to amend the Legal Profession Act. That legislation removed mandatory membership in the Bar Association and paved the way for attorneys to form or join a new Association…or not. The amendment was sparked by a period of hostilities between then Attorney-General Wilfred Elrington and the Bar Association, which he claimed was P.U.P.-dominated and basically defunct. So what happened to that move which many said was a deliberate attempt to break up the Bar. Today President Jacqueline Marshalleck didn’t know, so it doesn’t seem to have gone anywhere.

“I’m not aware of any other association having been formed or that is in the making of being formed. We continue to have a fairly large membership; we have over a hundred members. Those members come from both sides of the political fence or no political affiliations any at all. I think the Bar Association will just continue to do what it has to do and hopefully we’ll go from strength to strength, notwithstanding that we are newly reincarnated as a noncompulsory body.”
