According to the economist, CDF’s directives come from sessions such as those recently held in Belize where keen attention is paid to the needs of lesser developed countries.

“You’re in Belize on a working visit that goes along with the recent CARICOM Heads of Government, the intersessional meeting.  Can you speak to us on what your role as the Chief Executive Officer for the CDF is with regards to that context?”

Rodinald Soomer, C.E.O., CARICOM Development Fund

“Well we take our mandates from the conference of heads.  Any major policy decisions that are to be made to establish a fund have to be done at the wider CARICOM level, so we work through the councils of CARICOM.  So it’s always important for us to understand what priorities of the governments are.  What are the major issues that they are grappling with at the policy level, economic and social issues so that our development program that we then roll out to the countries fit that context.  It is not disconnected with the economic and social realities and priorities that the countries are grappling with.  So it is important that we be there to understand that broader context but also to look for specific opportunities to partner with other agencies to help to meet the pressing economic and social needs of the region through our programs.”

Soomer’s working visit to Belize concludes on Friday with a round of meetings with local and government officials scheduled in Belmopan.
