The Fight for Baby Nina is Headed to Guatemala

On Friday, media crews camped outside the Belize Family Court until dark, waiting for a determination on the fate of Nina Barrera Perez. The custody and jurisdiction woes of baby Nina have played out in the legal arena since November when she was removed from her mother’s care by the Department of Human Services. Finally, though, the decision was handed down. Two-year-old Nina would be returned to Guatemala. Her father’s contention that the child had been removed illegally from that jurisdiction was upheld. With the decision made, Nina would spend one final hour with her mother, Analiz Gutierrez, before being handed over to representatives of the Guatemalan embassy who shuttled her across the border Friday night. By Saturday morning she was handed over into the temporary custody of her father, Ernesto Barrera. Today, Analiz Gutierrez is making preparations to travel to Guatemala where she intends to fight for custody of Nina and defend her decision to remove her daughter from that jurisdiction. She declined an interview today, stating that she and her family have decided to handle the matter as privately as possible. But she asked us to repeat a message she sent out on Friday as she emerged from Court, thanking all those who have supported her.

“I would just want to thank first God, because despite the results right now, he has control over everything and I know that there must be a reason for all of this. And of course to everyone, to the whole country of Belize since day one, who has helped me and my family be able to locate resources, to be able to have finances to do all the legal stuff. I want to thank my family for the support, my mother; everyone who has been very active—not only with providing assistance of some type, through legal advice, through whatever financial, but also by those who provided support spiritually through prayers. And just being there and having Nina and my family and me inside their house.”
