Shooting Victim Jorge Lopez Recounts Nightmarish Experience

On Monday, we told you about the disturbing armed robbery of a Canadian couple just a few hours after they checked into the Tropical Education Center on the George Price Highway. Stephen Temple and Cynthia Fredrick may have lost their cash and valuable electronics, but they were unhurt. Jorge Cruz Lopez wasn’t so lucky. Lopez had the misfortune to be passing nearby on the Old Western Highway. He was heading to his father’s home, but immediately behind the Tropical Education Center he saw two bikes across the road and thought somebody needed assistance. Trying to be a Good Samaritan almost cost him his life. Two men with a firearm shot Lopez before taking off in his red Mazda pickup truck. During the shooting, Lopez managed to chop a twenty-one year old man from Mahogany Heights with a machete. That man was hospitalized and then released into police custody today. News Five sat down with Lopez this morning and he told us his harrowing tale.

Jorge Cruz, Shooting Victim [Translated]

“At around three in the afternoon I met two men and I thought they needed help. I stopped on the road and I opened the door to get out and help. When I opened the door he shot me in my back and the bullet came out through my leg and I fell to the floor. He came closer and the gun snapped three more times but didn’t fire. After that I grabbed a machete and chopped one of them. Then the other one picked up a rock to hit me in the head and I put up my hand to block it. Then, while I was on the ground, one of them got into the vehicle and then the other one got in and they turned the vehicle and left. In that moment I thought that they were going to kill me, because I was the only one there, nobody else. But the weapon didn’t fire. I’d like to tell anybody else that if they meet a situation like that don’t stop to help because it can be very dangerous.”
