BBA Yanks Plus TV’s On-Air Broadcasting License

Tonight there is disturbing and significant news coming out of Belmopan and it involves our colleague media house Plus Television in that municipality. News Five has been able to confirm that the Belize Broadcasting Authority has opted not to renew the station’s on-air broadcasting license for the year 2016. In a letter dated February four, BBA Chairman Louis Leslie writes that, “the Board of Directors of the Belize Broadcasting Authority has decided that it is now time for it to apply the law as set out in the Broadcasting and Television Act. In this case, you have applied to have your on-air broadcasting license renewed for the year 2016, despite the fact that Plus Television is not broadcasting over the air. Therefore, the Board cannot approve the renewal of your on-air licenses.” From our recollection, this is the first time that a news house has been refused a license to operate in Belize, and as we said it is a significant development. It is well known that Plus TV has had an adversarial relationship with the government. We are reliably informed that Plus TV does indeed broadcast on its own station twenty-four hours a day. We received this news late so were unable to get comment from the BBA.

Mein I think political vendetta should not be use in these things. All media sources should express themselves the way they want regardless who they go for politically, that’s why we are called a democratic country, this is a based christian station and news source for many. I tell you how nasty politics has turn now. It’s been a long time I have abstain from political matters nor vote nor nothing because the party who stays take vengeance on the people of the opposite party forgetting that they too pay taxes as well as those that favor the ruling party. come on G.O.B don’t be like Maduro now or Castro.

This is simply political victimization. We should not stand for this…where are the Unions and other voices fighting for social justice and freedom of expression? Government thru its various boards especially the Office of the Prime Minister cannot be vindictive and spiteful, this is foolishness!
