John Briceño Sworn in as Leader of the Opposition

At ten this morning, P.U.P. Leader John Briceño was sworn in as the Constitutional Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives. The new leader will have an enormous task ahead of him – uniting a Party which has been fragmented and also tackling a government which has won an unprecedented three consecutive terms. Today, Briceño was joined by friends and family at Belize House for the official ceremony. He told the media that he is aware of the work that lies ahead, and he is ready to get going.

“One of the first things I want to do is to meet with my Parliamentarians so that we can then discuss on the way forward. There are a number of issues we have to look at. We have to look at the issue of the House committees. There are at least a dozen House committees that we need to look at the composition and see how we can make sure that everybody participates and has a function to do. We certainly need to look at the issue of Senators to decide whether we’re going to keep the Senators or whether we’re going to change them. That is something that we need to decide. We have to get ready for the budget. I’ve heard that the budget is going to be presented in early March and the debate is going to be two weeks later. We have to start to prepare. I don’t expect it’s going to be a good budget. We all know that the government was reckless in its spending, especially coming to the general elections as we noted in December at the last House meeting in December, that the Prime Minister had to present a supplementary budget, meaning that they spent monies that were not programmed in the budget that was approved in March of last year, to the tune of forty-four point seven million dollars. All of this is going to haunt us as a government and as a people.”
