Special Envoy Supports Kaya Cattouse

Kaya Cattouse

Kaya Cattouse, the well-known female cyclist, has been threatened with suspension and fine by the Belize Cycling Federation for comments she posted on her Facebook page. Today, Cattouse received major support in her cry against the decision of the federation to cancel the participation of female cyclists in the upcoming Digicell Valentine’s Cycling Tour scheduled for February thirteen and fourteenth. The Special Envoy for Women and Children sent out a release this morning expressing support and encouraging women’s participation in sports. Kim Simplis Barrow says that to allow only the male elite cyclists to compete in this annual event, which previously included female riders, highlights the rampant gender inequality in sports. Barrow says that it is step in the right direction to be inclusive rather than exclusive as it relates to women in sports. The special envoy calls on the cycling federation and all other sporting associations to take deliberate actions to develop women’s sports in Belize.
