Cyclist Kaya Cattouse Fires Back At CFB through Her Attorney

On Thursday night, we brought you coverage of a brewing storm between elite female cyclist Kaya Cattouse and Cycling Federation of Belize President Dion Leslie. On Tuesday, Leslie wrote Cattouse threatening to fine and even suspend her if she did not cease her outspoken Facebook commentary. Cattouse has come out strongly against Digicell, the title sponsors of next weekend’s Valentine Tour. While male elites will enjoy a four-day, five-stage race, female and junior cyclists will only have a one-day race. It’ll be interesting to see what the Federation does next because Cattouse has lawyered up. In a letter to President Dion Leslie sent today, attorney Lisa Shoman chastises him for the rash action of threatening a fine and suspension without stating exactly what Cattouse did to breach the regulations of the Federation. Shoman writes that, “furthermore, the right to a fair hearing demands that prior to arriving at any conclusion that Ms. Cattouse had in fact breached the Code of Conduct, the federation should have provided my client with an opportunity to be heard.” Shoman goes further to state that, “I have advised my client that in my opinion the determination made against her by the CFB is therefore null and void.”
