David Almendarez Claims Small Operators Are Unfairly Regulated

David Almendarez

Almendarez and members of FECTAB have maintained that small operators are being unfairly treated while big companies get all the perks. They cite the many safety rules and structures which deter some tourists from choosing their packages, and say that those rules are not applied across the board.

David Almendarez, Executive Member, FECTAB

“When you come to our parks, the park that the others use…Stop, For Yor Safety, For Your Safety, For Your Safety…we are required to wear helmets now, we are required to be hooked up like this. And they say us, the others, are not up to par with the cruise ship…pictures of the others to show that we invest our lives and souls in our business, and this is the scrutiny and the amount of rules that we are subjected to everyday. Nothing happens at Dark Night cave system – no rules, not even collecting the government money – has its own artifacts, has its own caves, no rules. Nothing happens at CHUKKA, another company, outside company that has the best sweetheart deal with Carnival and some of the other major cruise lines – no checkpoint, no wait for eight persons, no rules. Newly constructed ramp – designed for mass tourism – poorly constructed. This was another sweetheart deal. Whenever it floods this entire platform breaks away from the cable and washes away in the cave system, making this part of the cave unsafe. No consultation by NICH – took about six to seven months to build and has been washed over more than two times – poorly built, very unsafe to load your guests in the middle of a river with no kind of safety and these are the people holding us to safety standards. These are the people shrinking our business in the name of safety.”
