Bert Vasquez Awaits Hearing for Sexual Offences

Bert Vasquez

Accused murderer and sexual predator Bert Vasquez was in Court today. Vasquez was accused of the murder of young Jasmine Lowe in 2012, but he is also accused of sexually abusing two girls as far back as 2011. Vasquez has been on remand since 2012 and it is expected that his substantive trial in at least one of his charges will be heard soon. Vasquez has been represented by Senior Counsel Simeon Sampson, but he has a new attorney. Today Oscar Salgado spoke to the media about his client’s legal future.

Oscar Salgado, Attorney for Bert Vasquez

“There are three cases against Bert Vasquez presently before the Courts. The first one is murder, and that will be tried in the Belmopan Court. A date has not been set yet. And then there are two other cases relating to sexual offences, one of them is before the Honorable Justice Lucas. I am here because that case is scheduled to be set down this morning before the honorable Judge. We will set a trial date this morning and from there we will proceed. I am looking at a date in May. April is finished on the calendar so we’re looking at May for a trial of one of the sexual offence allegations against Bert Vasquez. I have not had full disclosure yet. I have only taken over the case from Mr. Simeon Sampson last week so I am going through what I have of the disclosure and then Mr. Sampson will give me the remainder of documents because he has them.”

Mike Rudon

“Is there anything you can tell us at this point about the specifics of the allegations being made against your client?”

Oscar Salgado

“I don’t want to delve into that because I haven’t had the opportunity to delve into the whole case file so while I know it is sexual offences he is charged with I don’t have the specifics as yet. I will be able to comment in another week or so when I have read the file and I will happily do so to the media.”
