The Next Challenge for the P.U.P. is Village Council Election

John Briceño

The first real test of the P.U.P.’s strength, unity and energy will come in just a matter of weeks – Village Council elections. Briceño acknowledged the challenges facing the party in that battle, but says that it is a priority of his new administration.

John Briceño, Leader, People’s United Party

“One of the first things that we are going to do is that we need to do an analysis of the village councils, I think we have about one hundred ninety-three village sin the country, I believe that we should try to minimize politics in Village Councils. I have one village Council in my constituency, in Orange Walk Central and I have never put up a slate because with two hundred, three hundred people voting, they are just going to be dividing themselves but that is my position and that is not the party’s position. But we are going to do an analysis and we are going to look at the villages where there is…I want to welcome the Honorable Oscar Requeña, please give our colleague a round of applause. But we are going to make an analysis and we are going to come up with a robust campaign plan to see what are the villages that we need can win; it is going to be a difficult one, we need to understand that, I mean the government has just got in a few months ago and to have the villager know that if they were to vote for the P.U.P. representative, that their U.D.P. representative or committee is going to punish them. I mean look at Orange walk Town, we dared vote for a P.U.P. Town Council and they have done nothing to assist us, not a dollar they have given the Orange walk Town Council to help us. So we have to be real but we are going to work, we are going to work hard and wherever our help has been sought we are going to be said by side with our people in the different villages across this country.”
