Egbert Ferguson Succumbs to Injuries Sustained in Monday’s RTA

Egbert Ferguson

Tonight we report on four accidents that occurred on both main highways; of the four, one was fatal. On Monday afternoon, just before four o’clock, a pickup truck driven by Egbert Ferguson collided into a tour van, traveling from the opposite direction transporting six French tourists. A total of eleven persons were injured in the head-on collision between miles seventeen and eighteen on the George Price Highway. Ferguson was trapped inside the vehicle and when he was eventually removed, he rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where the forty-seven year old Hattieville resident succumbed twelve hours later. One tourist remains in a critical condition. News Five’s Duane Moody spoke to the Fergusons about the unfortunate loss of life.

Just before four on Monday afternoon, between miles seventeen and eighteen on the George Price Highway, a Ford one-fifty pickup truck traveling to Belize City and a Toyota Hiace van coming from the opposite direction crashed head-on. Inside the van was twenty-two year old Rogelio Reyes of Franks Eddy and five tourists and behind the steering wheel of the pickup was forty-seven year old Egbert Ferguson. Ferguson was traveling along with Daisy Olivera and his two nephews. The passengers from both vehicles were rushed to the K.H.M.H. for treatment, but while the others were released, Ferguson and French national Emilie Siman remained hospitalized. This morning, however, Ferguson succumbed to his injuries.

Paul Ferguson

Paul Ferguson, Brother of Accident Victim

“This morning about seven-forty-five, minutes to eight, I went to the hospital and they informed me that my brother was in a surgery last night and the surgery was successful. When he came out of the surgery, they said he was slipping in and out of coma and unfortunately, he didn’t make it.”

“When we spoke with you yesterday, we understood that his leg was only broken in two places. How did it get to this point?”

Paul Ferguson

“Yes Duane and that dah weh left me shook up because when we was at the hospital yesterday, dehn say everything all right; ih only got a broke foot. And I left the hospital about ten o’clock, eleven o’clock last night, about minutes to eleven. And I went home saying that my brother only has a broken foot. But last night when they took him in to do a scan on him, they said he had internal bleeding.”

According to police, preliminary investigations indicate that Ferguson swerved into the left lane and collided head-on into the van.

Rochelle Chan

Insp. Rochelle Chan, O.C., Hattieville Police

“I know that yesterday the two vehicles involved were a ford pickup and a tourist van. There were eleven persons injured and the driver, Mister Egbert Ferguson was very critical. He was caught in the vehicle and rescued by the fire department. Based upon information we have received and based upon statements we have recorded and witnesses, it appears that the Ford pickup seemed to have drifted into the other lane causing a head-on collision with the tourist van and that might have been the cause. What was the cause of it, I wouldn’t know as yet. The vehicles have not been inspected so that we could determine as to what could have been the actual cause.”

Siman who was along with five other female tourists remains in a critical condition at the K.H.M.H.

Insp. Rochelle Chan

“We know that there were six female tourists, French nationals from France. They all complained of body and head injuries. They were carried to the Karl Heusner Hospital, but according to the tour company they have insurance and they also have insurance for the passengers.”

Egbert is the father of nineteen children, but for his brother, Paul, his untimely death will remain etched in his mind.

Paul Ferguson

“It hurt because I dah the one that ker he up there to put on the nut for the vehicle. I ker back the nut to put on the vehicle and I mi deh with ahn. It hurt, it hurt.”

Both drivers had been served with Notice of Intended Prosecution. Duane Moody for News Five.
