Crime Stoppers fundraiser raffles house

Story PictureResidents often turn to Crime Stoppers to report criminals without putting themselves in harms way. All it takes is a toll free call—confidentiality guaranteed—and in some cases, the right information warrants a reward. But money doesn’t fall from the sky to cover the organizations expenses so Crime Stoppers today launched a fundraising effort with the raffle of a fully furnished house. Sponsors pooled their resources to construct the forty thousand dollar house that will be the grand prize in the raffle. The organization’s chairman, Francis Woods, says he hopes it will become an annual event and they are expecting it to be their biggest fundraiser.

Francis Woods, Chairman, Crime Stoppers Belize
“We have our expenses—we are a member of an international organization, we have dues. We pay rewards to people that call in successful tips. We have a lot of production of banners, posters; that kind of stuff. So we do have a lot of expenses and hopefully we can raise enough money to cover those expenses. We spent about forty thousand dollars even with the donated stuff cause we really went all out with this house. We completely furnished it, decorated it even included dishes. We are hoping to sell ten thousand tickets. Crime is a serious problem in Belize so if they buy a ticket, not only do they get a chance to win, but if they don’t win it’s a donation to crime stoppers that will help us give the public a way to call in information anonymously. We just printed a couple thousand posters that we plan to distribute countrywide reminding folks of what they can call in on with actual photos of people that are wanted, serious criminals that are wanted. Sometimes people may be working next to a criminal and they have no idea because they never saw a picture of what they look like. These people do need to get into Kolbe so that they can get rehabbed so that they can come out and be productive members of society.”

Tickets are available countrywide for ten dollars each. The raffle will be drawn on September thirteenth at the 2009 Expo at the SJC Gym.
