Retired educator wins Lotto

Story Picture
To most people the numbers 9, 10, 11, 15 and 20 might not mean much. But to retired school teacher Charles Woods they represent a massive windfall on the eve of the Christmas holidays. You guessed it: seventy-four year old Woods hit the ninety seven thousand five hundred dollar jackpot drawn on Saturday. It was the last draw for the month of November but since the telecommunications system was down over the weekend, Tropical Gaming Company was unable to verify the winning ticket with their head office in Canada. This morning, Woods, accompanied by his two year old adopted grand daughter whom he refers to as his inspiration, went into the Lotto office on Queen Street to claim his prize.

Charles Woods, $97,500 Lotto Winner

?Somehow I just felt that I would win it some blasted time. I just felt that I?d win. And as I told them in there I had what they call a pregnant hope, that it wasn?t a hope that was going to be shattered. But something was going to come of it and it worked out. I?m just lucky I guess.?

?Really it?s like, I use the word surreal. It?s like, I know its real but it?s like a dream; a fantasy. I can?t believe it. I guess when I start to spend some, I will believe it. But it?s just a tremendous feeling; it leaves me anxious too, like I am nervous. But it?s just a nervousness that I will get over. I just wanted to collect the check right. But I done feel better already.?

Patrick Jones

?You are a retired school teacher, what is a retired school teacher going to spend ninety seven thousand dollars on??

Charles Woods

?Well remember we were at Saint John?s College and the pension scheme didn?t begin for us until late. So the money I got for pension wasn?t that much and that would last me especially since I think I will live at least another ten or fifteen years. So it will help in my retirement, to face all the obligations and to live reasonably well.?

Patrick Jones

?Have you decided what you will spend it on already??

Charles Woods

?Well pay off some debts and some commitment I made to some charities and some good friend and then the rest I will deposit use some in my shares at credit union, and just whenever I need any extra things I just have some money, right.?

Woods told News 5 that the winning ticket was a quick pick. After income tax deductions, he took home eighty-two thousand, eight hundred and seventy five dollars. The jackpot for tonight’s draw reverts to fifty thousand dollars.
