Two suspects collared in Belmopan heist

Twenty-four hours after thieves stole thousands of dollars from Belize Water Services in a daring mid afternoon hold up in the nation’s capital, Belmopan police say they have detained two suspects and recovered eighty-five percent of the money. On Wednesday afternoon, three men, two of whom carried guns, walked into the B.W.S. office on Cardinal Avenue as if they were there to conduct business. But after scouting out their surroundings, the men sprang into action, ordering a supervisor to lie on the floor, tying up two other employees who were in the office and beating up the unarmed security guard posted at the door. The thieves then proceeded to help themselves to over four thousand dollars from the cashier?s station and also robbed a customer who was waiting in line to pay her bill. A BWS employee who managed to get out of the office during the robbery ran down the street and alerted neighbours who called the police. Although the cops responded quickly, when they arrived the three robbers had already fled the scene. With the assistance of neighbours however, one of the suspects was captured near Toledo Street. He had over three thousand dollars in his possession, which police believe is the proceeds of the robbery. The second suspect was captured this afternoon in Caye Caulker village. Both men, along with a third suspect who is still on the run, will be charged on Friday for two counts of robbery, five counts of aggravated assault and one count of harm.
