Artists paint park benches

Story Picture
Battlefield Park in Belize City is perhaps one of the most historic pieces of real estate in the downtown area. But the ambience of this public park has often left something to be desired. But a new organisation called the Belize Tourism Association is teaming up with local artists and the private sector to change all that. Since Thursday of last week, selected artists have been painting over the benches at Battlefield Park. It’s called Art in Motion and two of the participants, Pen Cayetano and Lita Krohn explained their contribution to the project.

Lita Krohn,Artist

?I?m used to painting small so this is really hard for me to get a big picture and I am doing my watermelons because I think they are bright. It?s close to the market and it?s very tropical. So that?s it.?

Pen Cayetano, Artist

?This painting here is named the Mighty Two. It represents the culture of Belize and the people. It?s also entitled Sub Umbra Floreo, but the modern one.?

One of the organisers of the Art in Motion Project, Francisca Nicholson, says when complete, the Battlefield Park installation will be named the Bench Museum. A similar beautification effort is ongoing at the Memorial Park with the addition of plants and other landscaping. After the Christmas holidays, the art work of students will be placed on the benches.
