Rotary holds toy drive

Story Picture
By now you’ve seen the Salvation Army Kettles around town–and hopefully gave your share of cash. But money isn’t the only thing being collected this Christmas…as I found out this morning.

Jacqueline Woods, Reporting

On Wednesday the Rotary Club dropped off Christmas bins at three main locations in Belize City. The idea is to collect as much toys as possible to give to children whose families simply cannot afford to buy them any presents. On Friday December seventeenth, The Salvation Army will host their annual Christmas lunch for a thousand boys and girls; by then, Rotarians like Eddie Bouloy hopes the public would have donated enough toys to let no child leave the table empty handed.

Eddie Bouloy, Member, Rotary Club of Belize

?They are trying to put off a Christmas party, their annual Christmas party for a thousand kids, but at this time of the year, they are not getting a lot of funds, they are not getting a lot of donations. Through the Rotary Association, we have come together with the Salvation Army and launched a toy drive.?

The white plastic barrels have been placed at Hofius and Brodies on Albert Street and A and R store on the Northern Highway. These businesses have also reduced their prices to make it even more affordable for Belizeans to support the drive.

Jacqueline Roe, Assistant General Manager, Hofius Limited

?If someone in here is buying a toy for their child, they can pick up something for less than five dollars, drop it in the basket and that would make someone?s Christmas really special.?

?Well it is a good cause, its for the Salvation Army, it is for underprivileged children, so we are trying to do as much as we can to help.?

The other good news is that, you do not need to buy a new toy in order to give your support.

Eddie Bouloy

?Talk to your kids at home, check what they have or bring a good used toy and make it, donate to a worthy cause. During this time of the year, you know spread some joy, spread some cheer to those children who may be less fortunate. We are very lucky as Belizeans that this year we did not have a hurricane or anything like that because if we had a hurricane we all would be spending a lot of money on repairs. You know spend a five dollars, a ten dollars or donate a good used toy and we are also asking people out in the districts if you are coming to Belize to shop for the Christmas holidays, look out for our toy drop off locations.?

Because there is only a limited time in which you have to drop off a toy, the public is being encouraged to start bringing in the donations and make a child=s Christmas very special.

Besides the stores mentioned, you can also purchase or drop off toys at Save U Supermarket and Mirab.
