Police Continue Meet & Greet Initiative on North and South Sides

Dezerie Phillips

Since mid 2015, the Eastern Division of the Police Department has embarked on meet and greet initiative to bring the community closer to the police as a strategy to curb crime. The police say it has been met with success and this afternoon we caught up with the top brass of the police in both the south and north side of the city.

ACP Dezerie Phillips, Regional Commander, Eastern Division North

“The results of it can obviously be seen; that the decrease in criminal activities of course is one. But greater than that is the increased participation from the community. Never before I have to say that we have seen this great level of cooperation and partnership and support from the community in every aspect and that is one of the successes that we can say for the meet and greet. Today, we are out here as we do every week and we are meeting residents, business community; so far the response has been a very good one, especially in this area where it is a very close-knit community. And persons are saying that when they are not at home, there is somebody always looking out for them, which is extremely good; I want to encourage others to foster that relationship with your neighbor. We have been told….persons have said that I had never been the victim of a crime; we have never had any incident of criminal activity to report in the area.”

Sr. Supt. Chester Williams, Regional Commander, Eastern Division South

“I believe that in administration, in order for you to succeed, you have to be consistent in everything that you do and where you lose that level of consistency, you find that you begin to drop back and things start to go out of control. So we keep at it; it is the second for the year and we will continue with this throughout the year of 2016. Over the past couple of weeks, we have had one or two incidents in different areas of south side Belize City. But we have found out that these problems are emanating from one area and there is something that is being planned—I cannot say at this time—but as I always said before, we continue to pursue those who do not wish to change their way of life. I believe in being reasonable, in giving a fair chance to people who want to change, but at the end of the day, I will not allow myself to be ridden by anybody to think that oh well, Chester is soft now and I can do what I want because I can tell you being soft is not in my nature. I try to change the method of policing that I do with a view to see how best we can work with people and giving them a fair opportunity. But when they do not want that opportunity, then we must take out the big stick.  We cannot spare the rod and spoil the child. So that will continue.”
