One Month After General Elections and Still No Union Senator Appointed

Marvin Mora

There have been two senate meetings since the new government took office last November, but the senator to represent the unions and civil society has been conspicuously absent. The unions have been unable to name its senator because they have been unable to put in motion the proper appointment process.  The former union senator, Ray Davis, was told to vacate, but remained in the post after he abstained from voting on the Petrocaribe Bill. Today News Five asked N.T.U.C.B. President Marvin Mora about the delay in the appointment.

Marvin Mora, President, N.T.U.C.B.

“The issue there is basically the modus operandi of the N.T.U.C.B. has changed. Before we never had that much consultation with the partners because it was understand by the other side of the table, the Civil Society Steering Committee; that the N.T.U.C.B. was the one responsible or that the person who was there as the senator was representing only N.T.U.C.B.  But now we have clarified that with them and we’ve engaged them in a different manner so that we can define a process on how we can go about selecting that person. But because there is no process in place that is what is holding up the process so long; however, the latest update we received from the Civil Society Steering Committee is that they are willing to work with a temporary replacement until we could cement a process.”

“Who is that person that you guys are considering?”

Marvin Mora

“To be honest, we have opened nominations. We still don’t know who that person will be but we don’t want to prolong that process long so we will probably have to put that deadline on nominations and then we move forward from there.”

Duane Moody

“Would you say that it has caused maybe a snag when it comes to having a representative there? We know that there’ve been several meetings of the Senate since the new government was installed last year and still o representative from you guys.”

Marvin Mora

“Sure, that’s the reason why we had pressed on from the beginning because regardless of who you chose, you can always replace that person. And that is the reason why we are pressing on from early on to ensure that we do have a representative. But since we have missed some meetings, we have to work the process and make sure we have one there.”
