PM Barrow Assumes Pro Tem Chairmanship of CARICOM

Prime Minister Dean Barrow, as of the first of January, assumed pro tem chairmanship of the Caribbean Community.  For the next six months he will preside over a series of CARICOM meetings, including the annual gathering of regional heads of state scheduled for mid-February in Placencia. This is why the Secretary General of CARICOM, Irwin LaRocque is in Belize. He’s briefing the PM on his scope of responsibilities in the months ahead.  His three-day working visit also included calls on the Caribbean Community Climate Change Center, as well as the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism.  This morning, following a brief session at CRFM, Ambassador LaRocque spoke of his visit to the country.

“As you would know, the Prime Minister of Belize, the Honorable Dean Barrow, is now the chairman of CARICOM as of the first of January.  And as is customary when a chair comes on board, assumes the position, I would come to brief the chairman and to begin planning as well or continue planning the hosting of the meeting of heads of government which will take place here in Belize on the sixteenth and seventeenth of February.  The intercessional meeting of heads of government will take place in Placencia.  As chairman, the prime minister has a very critical role to play, not just in chairing the meeting, chairing the head of the community over the next six months.  So it goes well beyond the meeting, it goes to any and every issue that may be ceased of in the community that requires attention at the highest political level, including representational issues or other sorts of political issues.  So that basically is it.  And I could not be here in Belize without paying a visit to two of our regional institutions, CARICOM institutions, as you see I am in front of the CRFM and Mr. Haughton is here with me and yesterday afternoon I had the great pleasure of also visiting the Climate Change Center in Belmopan.  The Climate Change Center of course having played a very critical role only last month in Paris, in terms of facilitating our member states in negotiations forward.  I consider it a very successful outcome of the COP Twenty-one on Climate Change.  So here we are and I just want to emphasize that CARICOM is not just about the CARICOM Secretariat.  CARICOM is an architecture of institutions and the member states that all work hand in hand together.”

PM Barrow will convey the rotating six-month chairmanship at the end of June to the commonwealth of Dominica.
