Investigations Continue in Youth Hostel Tragedy

The special investigation into the fire which claimed the lives of three minors at the Princess Royal Youth Hostel commenced five weeks ago, on December first. To date, no information has been provided on any findings coming out of that investigation. Via text, C.E.O. in the Ministry of Human Development Judith Alpuche told us only, “It is progressing and there will be a press conference when it is completed.” With no answers from that end, we turned to the police, who were also conducting a parallel investigation into the incident. According to Commander of the Rural Eastern Division Edward Broaster, they’re still investigating, and when that is done they will turn the file over all evidence to the person who will handle the Coroner’s Inquest to determine culpability, or not.

“The investigation is still ongoing. We are awaiting the doctor’s report, as well as the Fire Department’s report. A few statements are still left to be recorded, and then we’ll be forwarding that file to the Special Coroner. The investigation is very tedious. We have to look at whether or not there was negligence on the part of the staff, whether or not there was any criminal negligence from them as well. When we conclude this file it will go to the Special Coroner for the Coroner’s Inquest to really look to see if there is anybody culpable for the death of the three females at that facility. Once we have the evidence to show the criminal liability is there for anybody to be charged, they will be charged.”
