The gym peak season – the notorious busiest time of the year at gyms all over. The majority of new members are endeavoring to start the year with a healthier lifestyle while others are simply getting back on track after the Holiday gluttony. According to Owner and Instructor at Health & Body Fitness 2000 in Belize City, most people tend to work out with a specific goal in mind.

“This is usually our peak season for us. We have Easter, it goes on after that with carnival and again after that; so we looking forward to a good season. Sometimes they have New Year’s resolution and they say I will start the gym for a lee while. But the gym is not a short period of time. It’s a way of life. It’s not about becoming a muscle man; it’s about look good feel good, but feels good about yourself.”

Neal says it doesn’t matter what shape you’re in; his gym has something to offer everyone. The biggest mistake he sees new members make is starting their fitness journey with unrealistic expectations.

“People come in and want to be superman or woman and go straight to the weights but the first step is cardio. We go two weeks into cardio – bikes, elliptical or treadmill and we also use our steps we have here. We have to do that to get them to point where they won’t get discouraged and pain and pass out. We always have to keep a little glucose on deck. They want to come in and do it all but it’s a session that you have to stretch it out. We would try to direct them to a trainer that specialize in that area, give them a lot of cardio for them to get their weight down and also we have Miss Rosito in the back who is a nutritionist who also assist us. We also encourage them to stay. I meet them on the street and I tell cone back but most of all I try to direct them and look out to see them. They need attention cause having a lot of weight it will be frustrated sometime you can be really discouraged about yourself.”

The evening dance and aerobics classes are also very popular. In fact, he suggests dance as a great introductory exercise and a way to add some fun to your routine.

Mark Neal

“I try to direct them to the Zumba; it’s a whole lot of dancing not a lot of squatting. They look forward to it. It’s an easy process where they can just dance. It gets the muscle going – muscles that haven’t been working. They enjoy it a lot especially the older folks.”

You can also hire personal trainers but the gym does have trainers on hand to assist you in your workouts. The most important step though is to get started. Gym membership at Health & Fitness gym is sixty dollars a month; an investment, Neal says that is well worth it.

Mark Neal

“It’s a good investment; I would encourage everyone to do it. If you look at it, it’s only two dollars a day. We have Zumba. We have step class. We have Danza, we have weight class.  We have all these tools here to assist you for that two dollars a day.”
