Canadian Filmmaker Matt Klinck Killed Near Spanish Lookout

Matthiew Klinck

Thirty-seven year old film-maker Matthiew Klinck is well known in Belize for the first-ever telenovela, La Isla Bonita, set in San Pedro as well as for the Curse of Ixtabai. But sometime over the weekend, in the peaceful community of Selena behind Spanish Lookout, the Canadian actor, cinematographer, producer and director was stabbed to death. The decomposed body of the Quebec native was found on Monday night in his yard, with fourteen stab wounds to the face, neck and upper body. Today, police and forensics personnel scoured the scene and performed an onsite autopsy. They hope that any evidence they find will lead them to a motive and hopefully, to a vicious killer. News Five’s Mike Rudon was in Selena today and has the story.

Matthiew Klinck was a household name in Belize’s film industry; the brain and talent behind several local series, documentaries and short films. Since May 2014 he lived here at this remote location in Selena, a small community a few miles out of Spanish Lookout. Klinck was house-sitting while the owners were away, but sometime over the weekend he was killed. San Ignacio Police got the call just after eight on Tuesday night.

Reymundo Reyes

Insp. Reymundo Reyes, Deputy O.C., Cayo Police Formation

“A team of Police officers including myself visited the said location. On arrival we saw the motionless body of a Caucasian male person lying in a face-up position about fifteen feet away from the residence. Initially we just observed what appeared to be a small cut wound on the left side of his neck. The area was checked. We noticed that the inside of the building had been ransacked and so forth, indicating that somebody was in the house. We still saw a lot of electronic items inside the building that was not removed. During that process we managed to get the identity of the individual, learned to be Matthiew Klinck.”

The decomposed body of Klinck was discovered by chance, when two of his friends went to hang out.

Insp. Reymundo Reyes

“It was last night when two friends decided to visit his residence that they noticed that the front door was open. They called for him several times but no response. And that is how they started to look around and they found his body.”

Edwin Paz, Caretaker

“Last night around eight o’clock, eight-thirty, his friends came over and they looked for him. The door was open and the truck was open, so they came here and asked if I could go along with them and bring some light. So I followed them, and I found the body.”

Edwin Paz

Caretaker Edwin Paz and his family live here at the entrance of the only road which leads directly to the house where Klinck was killed. He claims that no vehicle could have passed there without his dogs raising the alarm, and the last person to go through the gate was Klinck himself.

Edwin Paz

“It was Saturday between three and four. He was driving and he only stopped by, said hi and he drove in. That’s how he normally did it.”

“Did it seem like something was wrong, or just normal?”

Edwin Paz

“No, just normal. I think he was happy going in.”

But there is no happiness to be found in this area today. Just after eleven this morning the body of Klinck was taken to the road where the autopsy would be concluded. Klinck was a Canadian citizen and there will be intense scrutiny at every stage so Police are proceeding with all diligence.

Insp. Reymundo Reyes

“We are already conducting interviews with friends and relatives who we have contacted in Canada. His parents have been contacted from last night and they know about the situation. We are still maintaining that communication with them, and at the end of the day we will be giving them the results of the post-mortem as to what would be the cause of death.”

The victim’s vehicle, parked in the yard, was also meticulously processed in the hope that it would provide answers.

Insp. Reymundo Reyes

“As a part of the investigation we have to process everything that is in the immediate area. Keenly we have to look at the vehicle, we have to look inside the premises and around the premises to see if there is any evidence there which could assist the Police in their investigation.”

While Police say the home appeared to have been ransacked, we have also been told that Klinck’s high-tech cameras, equipment, phones and other electronics were untouched.

Edwin Paz

“I think they only came to kill him, that’s all. I don’t think they came to rob him because everything was there.”

The family of Matthiew Klinck will be arriving in Belize on Thursday. He had no relatives living in Belize. Mike Rudon for News Five.
