High Speed Chase in the City Leads to Apprehension of Shooting Suspect

Chester Williams

There were shots fired on Curassow Street in Belize City on Monday night, and quick response from Belize City police has led to the arrest of a man who is not one of the usual suspects, and isn’t even from the Old Capital. Today, police told us that they got reports of gunfire in the area after nine Monday night, and that led to a high speed chase and the apprehension of a man who may have been brought in to assist in a hit.

Sr. Supt. Chester Williams, Commander, Eastern Division South

“Police were in the immediate vicinity and they ended up pursuing a vehicle, I think it was a Mitsubishi Endeavour, and the vehicle was pursued through the streets of Belize City. I must say that I was a part of that pursuit as well; I was in my assigned government vehicle and I heard the shots fired and the Strike Team was in the immediate pursuit and I went to aid them. And managed to catch up with the vehicle on Elston Kerr Street and we arrested one Christian Herrera, a resident of San Ignacio Town, who was the driver of the vehicle. During the pursuit, something was seen thrown out of the vehicle and he was immediately taken back toth e location where the object was seen thrown and the object turned out to be a nine millimetre pistol which was one of the weapons of choice used in committing the shooting at that particular time. So we have since arrested and charged Christian Herrera for kept unlicensed firearm in respect of that matter.”

“You say he is from San Ignacio. Is he someone known to be in and around Belize City or is it believed that he came down from San Ignacio to execute a hit, I guess?”

Sr. Supt. Chester Williams

“We believe that he was brought down to Belize City from San Ignacio by the other elements, because they were three persons, but the other two managed to get away. And we believe that he was brought down by them to assist them with vehicle and resources to go and commit the crime. And after the shooting would have occurred, he would just go back to San Ignacio and no one would figure who did it.”
