Deal Brokered In Cuban Migrant Crisis

There is tentatively good news for Cuban migrants stuck in Costa Rica following a SICA meeting held in Guatemala on Monday. According to reports, an agreement has been reached for an undisclosed number of Cubans to  be flown out of Costa Rica to El Salvador, and bussed from there to Mexico, and then on to the U.S.  The resolution is timely, but will it be enough? Cubans have mounted what seems like a mass exodus to take advantage of the ‘wet foot dry foot’ legislation which provides for Cubans who reach the U.S. to become legal residents within a year. When we first reported on this story, approximately four thousand Cubans were stranded in Costa Rica. Today, we are told, the number is closer to eight thousand. Still, the decision coming out of that high-level meeting has to provide some measure of relief.

In a televised address, Costa Rican president Luis Guillermo Solis implored Cubans to stay at home until the situation is resolved.
