Manhunt Underway for Escaped Prisoner Lawrence Bernardez

Lawrence Bernardez

Twenty-seven-year-old Lawrence Bernardez, a resident of Lakeland in Dangriga who has a long rap sheet, remains on the lam tonight after escaping from police custody on Wednesday. Police are seeking the public assistance in apprehending Bernardez, who is considered dangerous. He was being transported to the Belize Central Prison along with two other inmates, Edan Guzman and Daniel McKenzie, when they decided to make a run for freedom.  Upon approaching a speed bump near Hattieville, the pickup truck the men were traveling in decelerated and that’s when Bernardez and Guzman made their daring escape.  The men were immediately pursued and when police closed in on Guzman he forcefully resisted arrest, resulting in him being shot in the leg.  Bernardez, during the mayhem, managed to evade capture and remains on the run.  Bernardez’s rap sheet is rather extensive.  In May 2012, he was shot by officers in Dangriga who were pursuing him for questioning.  Despite being ordered to stop, the fugitive continued fleeing from police.  When they caught up with him, he allegedly produced a firearm and took aim at one of the officers.  That officer then shot him in the upper left side of the chest.  As previously mentioned, an all points bulletin has been issued for the capture of Lawrence Bernardez.
