BTL Attorney Confident of Victory in Swasey vs. Mek Mi Rich Case

Magali Perdomo

Arguments were heard today in the case of Entrepreneur Curtis Swasey from Corozal versus Belize Telemedia and MMR Belize Limited. Swasey says executives of Belize Telemedia Limited used his unique idea for a lottery texting program via short message service (SMS) to underline the Mek Mi Rich television program, which has been airing for the past fourteen months. Since February of this year, producers MMR Belize Limited and the state-run telephone company have been in court and trial took place today before Justice Courtney Abel, where MMR and B.T.L. tried to show that Swasey’s idea was not unique or original and not even complete. In trial today, Attorney for B.T.L., Magali Perdomo, closely questioned Swasey on the witness stand as to the sequence of his communications with B.T.L. executives in 2011 and 2012, trying to show that he did not send all the information they requested and that the idea for “Super Slam Sunday,” which was to be applied to buying Sunday Lottery and Boledo tickets, was different from “Mek Mi Rich.” Perdomo insists Swasey failed to meet two important tests in establishing his case – that he owned or invented the concept and that his information exchange agreement with her client was breached.

Magali Perdomo, Attorney for B.T.L.

“We are very confident; the case went excellent for us. What the court has asked for Mr. Swasey to do is to show that he is the owner of lottery texting; so in this great wide world of bright minds that you Mr. Curtis Swasey created the idea of texting and lottery via SMS. He did not prove that today, he has also failed to prove that my client B.T.L. breached the confidentiality agreement with him. He did not show an email, he did not show a text, he could not show a conversation. So he totally failed to show a breach on the part of B.T.L. So we are very confident in the way that the case is proceeding for us.”
