New Evangelical Association Formed

There is great unrest in the core evangelical church structure in Belize tonight, following a distinct split in the previously powerful Belize Association of Evangelical Churches. Following what they say was their arbitrary suspension from the B.A.E.C.; thirty national executives representing two hundred plus churches across the country have now formed the National Evangelical Association of Belize. On the face of it, the rift was caused because of a disagreement on the Constitution which would govern the B.A.E.C. But the consensus, at least among the leaders who held a press conference today, is that it was more than that. The executive of the brand new N.E.A.B. spoke for the first time since the suspension months ago.

Pastor Lance Lewis, President, National Evangelical Association of Belize

Pastor Lance Lewis

“The Evangelical Association, the BAEC, each pastor represented a group of churches. That was the original thing. That’s a small number now. Our new structure…each pastor represents large numbers of denominations, but we are in all the districts and we are in Belmopan as a separate entity from the Cayo District, so we represent a larger number. The BAEC was to represent the entire country but was structured and centred around Belize City. They decided it was time to get a greater cross-section of the community so plans were made to draw up a new constitution that would include all the various churches in the evangelical world in Belize and all the different districts, and that was where we were, and suddenly things shifted. But we are on the same track to include as many churches as possible and that is what we are about. Right now that is where we are. We represent every district in the country of Belize. The present BAEC which cut us out represents Belize City.”
