UNESCO Committee Applauds GOB Decision

Government acted following a threat to remove the system from the List of World Heritage Sites because of concerns on the sale, lease and development of mangrove islands and the absence of a framework for its conservation. That was in 2009, a year later in 2010, the World Heritage Committee told the government it was concerned about the potential for oil developments within and immediately adjacent to the iconic World Heritage Site. Today, the Committee applauded the government’s decision as a major first step toward the removal of the Barrier Reef from the List of World Heritage in Danger.   The World Heritage Committee strongly believes that oil and mining exploration and exploitation are incompatible with World Heritage status. Next week, the World Heritage Centre will be in country to discuss the full implementation of the Desired State of Conservation that would makeBelizeeligible for removal from the List of World Heritage in Danger.
