BEL Donates Generously to St. Mary’s Feeding Program

Today the St. Mary’s feeding program benefitted from a very generous donation from Belize Electricity Limited, part of its ongoing outreach and support initiative.

The feeding program is generally funded through monies generated from the Church and through generous members and friends at home and abroad. But with more than one hundred children fed daily, resources have been stretched thin, and that’s where B.E.L. made a huge difference today.

“The feeding program started in 1994. The reason it was started is that Canon Flowers saw the need for it because we had a lot of absentees and since we started the program it reduced the truancy for the school. So we have more children attending school and every day they get a warm meal.”

“The feeding program costs us like four thousand dollars per month for the feeding program. We feed like over one hundred and twenty kids.”

Sheena Garnett, Senior Public Relations Officer, B.E.L.

“For the St. Mary’s feeding program, this is the first time we are partnering with them. So the request comes in via letters of donation or sponsorship, and based on a selection criteria we would directly donate to them. Most importantly we look to donate based on socio-economic need. We are grateful and thankful to be allowed the opportunity to participate and volunteer today to feed the children in the feeding program. Apart from volunteering we donated ten dining tables, a hundred chairs, eating utensils, a refridge and we also made a cash donation.”

“We want to thank them so much. We greatly appreciate it. It is of great use and we’ll make use of it.”

In terms of cash assistance, B.E.L. donated five thousand one hundred dollars.
