Wesley College Vice Principal is an Alleged Crack Peddler

What’s next for embattled vice-principal and teacher of Wesley College, Melvin Hewlett? He is accused with drug related charges after he was allegedly caught throwing suspected crack cocaine wrapped in a white paper into the school’s compound. The thirty-five career math teacher has been teaching at the church-state institution for over thirteen years during which he made his way up to the second in command post in the administration. Last Friday morning, the Gang Suppression Unit headed to the area of Yarborough Road where they spotted Hewlett with an alleged drug peddler who it is said led them to the vice principal. This is where the GSU claims they saw when Hewlett threw a piece of paper into his school’s compound. They escorted him to where the item landed and when it was opened, they found two plastic bags with fourteen grams of suspected crack cocaine.  He was charged late on Friday at the Magistrate Court with Possession of Controlled Drugs with the Intent to Supply to Another Person. The incident has tainted the image of Wesley College and its board is now making recommendations to the Ministry of Education following an emergency meeting on Monday night. Right Reverend Roosevelt Papouloute of the Methodist Diocese explains.

Rt. Rev. Roosevelt Papouloute, President of the Methodist Conference of Belize

“I will not go to say as to what happened because to be honest with you, the matter is now in the hands of the court. I would prefer to leave that for the court to deal with. Ummm, though we heard as you heard in the news, I will stay away from just repeating what we heard. I will leave it for now for the court to deal with the situation. As you rightly said, it is an allegation until the court decides differently. Of course, we at Wesley College and the Methodist family on a whole, we are very sorry about what happened and we are doing our best. I will tell you that we had a preliminary board meeting last night, yesterday, Monday evening, beginning to look into the matter. We can only make recommendation at some aspect to the Ministry of Education as a board. We will be forwarding some of the recommendation to the Ministry of Education for its consideration via its committees and then we will take it from there.”

Duane Moody

“Recommendations, preliminary recommendations that will be made to the Ministry of Education… Would you be willing to disclose maybe something on that? What could be maybe a first step that could be taken by management to address the situation or even the void of his not being there as vice-principal?”

Rt. Rev. Roosvelt Papouloute

“Well ummm, it would be unfair to let the ministry officials or those committees responsible to hear this from us in the news until we make that recommendation to them and maybe after that we can make that recommendation to them and maybe after that, we can talk about it.”
