Ministry of Education Issues Release on Melvin Hewlett

Late this evening, the Ministry of Education issued a statement on the developments with respect to the arrest and charge of Melvin Hewlett for drug trafficking. The ministry cites sections of the Education (Amendment) Rules, 2012 which deals with criminal proceedings. It says that a Managing Authority, in this case the Methodist Board, may start disciplinary proceedings against a teacher who has been criminally charged and may interdict the teacher by detailing the grounds for the interdiction to the Services Commission for approval. Once interdicted, the teacher may receive a portion of his salary for six months. If the teacher is not guilty, he can go back to the classroom, but if he is guilty of a criminal charge, he will be subject to disciplinary proceedings for the offence. These weighty measures include demotion, fine or loss of salary, suspension, retirement, dismissal and/or the revocation of his teaching license.
