Manzanero Says Illegal Logging Has Decreased

Rafael Manzanero

As to the decrease in illegal logging, Manzanero says that there is a pattern to since the beginning of 2015. In one hand, logging is down, but harvesting of   xaté, poaching of the scarlet macaw are way up.

“Yes, there is even much more of a presence on the ground based by the ranger efforts. With the eighteen of us on the field, they certainly were able to cover more on the range. But secondly, there has been also a twin program with our counterparts in Guatemala. So they have also been able to come aboard in terms of putting police stops and be able to also detain loggers that cross their border into Guatemala. And so there is a whole set of operations that they have conducted; some of the loggers have been caught, timber has been confiscated. That also can be a deterrence. And the third reason is because now, as Guatemalans are coming much more further into the country, it is even much more harder for them to extract the timber. So the probability of being caught is even much more. So if you are looking at seventeen kilometers within Belizean territory then the effort, the resources that they would need to use is much more complicated to them. So we believe that there are particular deterring reasons why illegal logging could have been decreased.”
