Free Zone Businessman Killed in Double Murder in Chetumal

There is another homicide to report, but local police could not offer any details. A sensational double murder took place over the weekend in the neighbouring Chetumal. A businessman from the Belize Commercial Free Zone, Ernesto Alonso De Miguel, also known as “El Espanol,” was murdered on Saturday, at a popular restaurant across the border. According to an account on Noticaribe, shortly before midnight a gunman entered the downtown restaurant ‘El Emporio’ and opened fire.  Businessman Alonso De Miguel and Agustín Martínez Guevara, the commander in the border town of Subteniente Lopez, were killed instantly. Others in the group, including another police officer and family members, escaped unhurt.  The gunman fled the scene leaving behind the murder weapon. Police soon after detained one person but it is not known if he will be charged for the double homicide. The newspaper reports that Alonso De Miguel is the owner of ‘Casa de las Toallas’ store in the Free Zone and alleges that he was linked to contraband cigarettes, liquor and other products. There are also allegations that the businessman had ties to a drug cartel operating in the Zone.
