Plan of Action in Effect to Manage Bacterial Outbreak

Alvin Henderson

According to Henderson, the industry is trying to manage the effects of the bacteria to ensure that farms put the strategic response in place. Stakeholders are working along with the Ministry of Agriculture to contain the bacteria.

Alvin Henderson, President, Shrimp Growers Association
“Well it is a bacteria…and this is unusual. Bacteria is a primary infection in our industry is very unusual. Normally you will see a viral infection; a virus and then you would see secondary infection from a bacteria. In this case it is a bacteria—a bacteria called libya para humitas. What is challenging about this bacteria is that it is ubiquitous; it actually sits in the marine environment. So our strategy response really as an industry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, has been three. One, genetic improvement…we are in the process and have already begun building a new genetic material that is resistant to this particular bacteria and we know it is because we’ve run trial in labs in the United States and other parts of the world including Mexico. So that’s the first response. The other response is what is called biological control where you are using other bacteria to control and contain this particular bacteria that’s causing us some difficulty. And the third response is changing management practices. So in light of all of these three strategies that we are running jointly with the Ministry of Agriculture, we still expect—though we are having some delay because of the timing of the importation of some stuff—we expect that by the first quarter of the coming year, you might have a couple months drift, we should see recovery in the industry. But it’s been a joint response; it has been very comprehensive.”

Henderson forecasts that the industry will be up and running early next year.
