Did Gapi Vega Refuse to Give Up Office at Ministry of Natural Resources?

Godwin Hulse

As we’ve reported, Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega was stripped of the natural resources portfolio which he had held since 2008. That powerful ministry was given to Senator Godwin Hulse. It hasn’t exactly been a smooth transition, and we are told that things have been chaotic at the Natural Resources building located in Cohune Walk, Belmopan. That’s where Vega held sway over both Lands and Agriculture, and the split is creating all sorts of problems – not the least of which is that Minister of Agriculture Vega is still occupying the office which, theoretically, should go to Minister of Natural Resources Godwin Hulse. We spoke to both Ministers today in Belmopan.

Godwin Hulse, Minister of Natural Resources

“I’ve met all the staff so far and met with the outgoing Minister, the C.E.O., etc. We are reorganizing the building a little bit because as you know the Ministry of Agriculture is still housed there so we have to find seating and that sort of thing so that it’s convenient. We’re in the process. Hopefully in the next week that would have been finalized.”

“We’re told that Minister Gaspar Vega refuses to give up his office, saying that he’s not going anywhere.”

“It’s not that he refused to give it up. That is incorrect and inaccurate. He is the Minister of Agriculture and Agriculture and Natural Resources was housed I that building. So there’s no need for him to move and there’s no need for his C.E.O. to not occupy, because he continues to be the Minister of Agriculture. There was office space there for a Deputy Minister, Minister Patt at the time who held the portfolio of agriculture. All we are doing is trying to organize the building for easy flow with the C.E.O.s, the Deputy Ministers, myself as a Senior Minister together with Minister Vega.”

“It’s a bit confusing…offices and even staff, because we had one Ministry with Agriculture and Lands and we were represented by one set of human resources, and now it has to be split up. It’s a bit confusing and we still have not settled those things.”
