Rodwell Williams Says Slander is an Appropriate Charge

Rodwell Williams

Rodwell Williams says the suit for slander is an appropriate charge, and he disagrees that the offence would have to be committed verbally. He told News Five that by his actions, if not his words, Cervantes Junior certainly slandered Vega.

Rodwell Williams, Attorney for Gaspar Vega

“We are not saying he said. If you slander your friend down the corridor, and I go and repeat it, I have slandered your friend. I repeat exactly what you said. So what he did, and why he is being sued, is that he heard the slander by Manuel Castillo and what he did is organize and orchestrate that it be broadcast. So he produced and he repeated, not through his mouth, using Castillo’s statement. You know I can slander you…I can libel you in private, face to face. But it is only actionable when it goes to the public, to two or more persons. Face to face I can tell you what I wish to tell you. What he did was take what was slanderous material, defamatory material and he broadcast it. He published it. He caused it to be published, and that’s why we are suing him. We don’t take the position that he has to repeat it with his mouth, but he orchestrated the production, airing, publication to the people at assemblance at Mameyal and caused it to be put on air.”
