A Police Investigation into Death of Arlie Avilez

Arlie Avilez

Was fifty-one year old Arlie Andrew Avilez killed? An investigation is ongoing by officers attached to the Belama Police Station into the untimely death of the Belize City man on October twenty-fifth at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. The official police version is that on October ninth, Avilez was involved in a brawl on the Philip Goldson Highway with Caribbean Hotel proprietor, Chen Wen Hua. The Chinese hotelier suspected that Avilez was stealing from his establishment and during a fight, he was wounded by Avilez. Police say that when they arrived on scene, Avilez was subdued by Wen Hua. The duo was taken into the Belama precinct and Avilez was subsequently charged with wounding. Officer Commanding Precinct Four, Superintendent Linden Flowers, told News Five today about what they understood transpired on the night of October ninth.

“Just before one a.m., a personnel from this precinct was dispatched to the establishment at Caribbean Hotel where upon arrival they saw the proprietor, a Chinese businessman and the deceased, Avilez, in a struggle….it wasn’t a struggle at the time; they were in a confrontation. When the first responding officers on the scene discovered what occurred, they escorted both persons to the Belama police station. The Chinese businessman and Mister Avilez were issued with medical forms and they both sought medical attention at the K.H.M.H. after the investigation continued, they discovered that Mister Avilez was on this establishment intending to steal some clothing from the establishment ground as well as he had entered the vehicle of a patron at the establishment. That was aborted by one of the employees calling the attention of the businessman who approached and subsequently subdued Mister Avilez until the police arrived. The police then took him to the K.H.M.H….everything a normal incident recorded…record showing Mister Avilez was in the police station for an hour or two and then he was escorted to Karl Heusner where he received treatment and he complained to one of the police officers who issued a medical form to him, which is the normal course of things.”
