Will Any Charges Be Brought Against Chinese Hotelier?

On October thirteenth, however, only Avilez would appear before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith and arraigned for one count of wounding upon the Chinese businessman. He pleaded guilty to the charge and was released.  But in court that day, Avilez told the Chief Magistrate that he was badly beaten—not for attempting to steal, but while collecting bottles in a drain near the hotel. He also claimed that he was struck in the head during the incident and that he had spent six days in the hospital. Two days later, on October fifteenth, Avilez was re-hospitalized and passed away on October twenty-fifth at the K.H.M.H.  A postmortem exam this past Tuesday by Doctor Estradabran confirms that Avilez died from blunt head trauma. Police confirmed today that there is no surveillance footage of the incident because the incident happened more than a month ago. So will any charges be brought against the Chinese hotelier?

Supt. Linden Flowers, O.C., Precinct 4, Belize City Police

“The investigation as far as that part of the investigation is still ongoing. And when we find that there is sufficient evidence to charge him for the injuries then that will be done. But at this time, I will say that he has not been charged and we are still conducting that investigation.”

Duane Moody

“The postmortem done on his body on the tenth of November indicate that he died from head trauma. That would indicate that he received some form of blunt force to the head. Now, we know that in the police report that was sent out, the Chinese businessman was reportedly hit with the metal pipe. Have you guys been able to ascertain whether or not Mister Avilez was also injured to the head in some way, given the fact that that was what he died from?”

Linden Flowers

Supt. Linden Flowers
“All of the factors are taken into our investigation which is currently ongoing. That is what the medical report says. I cannot say otherwise; I’ve read what the postmortem has said and I’m hoping that we get to the bottom of this and if those are the injuries that have caused his untimely death or whatever it is, we need to find out. I am not in the line of assumption, but I am not going to say…I am trusting that the investigation is going to bare out what occurred and that Mister Avilez death will be properly ventilated.”

Duane Moody

“Sir but you do agree that he had to have died from a force to the head?”

Supt. Linden Flowers
“The death certificate is saying that he had blunt force trauma. At this time, the superintendent, the investigating officer, cannot say. We are investigating as in depth as possible to see what is the result. Where was he after he was released from the court; how many hours it was that he was released from the court; what it was that he complained of at the hospital; what were the injuries that were observed by the police and all of those things will be brought into question?”

Duane Moody

“Sir we know establishment like those would normally have surveillance cameras on the compound. Have you guys been able to go and get surveillance footage from the night when that incident happened to maybe see what transpired? Maybe it would show that he was in fact hit to the head?”

Supt. Linden Flowers
“Unfortunately the investigators were out at the establishment this morning and we were unable to get footage from that scene, footage of that, because the camera system at the establishment is a monthly rotation.”

If the police had INVESTIGATED the entire incident when it originally happened and not just grab hold of the underprivileged Belizean they would have seen exactly what happened. So why is the Chinese businessman not being charged for taking the law into his own hands by beating this individual? Or why isn’t he also being charged for brawling and causing public disturbance? Wow! So the laws don’t apply to foreign nationals, only Belizeans?

It’s a dog-on shame! The whole system in Belize disgusts me. I know a lot of good Chinese people but seriously? How dare he go to a foreign country and take the law into his hand? And what’s worst? Cause a Belizean’s death! Over in China, you cannot hurt or kill one of theirs and not face the justice system. Shame shame shame…
