Six Senators Named to Upper Parliament, Lee Mark Chang is New President

Dean Barrow

Prime Minister Barrow also named the new Senators of the United Democratic Party, starting with his candidate who unsuccessfully attempted to regain the Freetown seat from P.U.P. leader Francis Fonseca.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“I have broken what was a longstanding informal rule of mine that no candidate who ran in the election and didn’t win would be made a Senator. In this situation Dr. Carla Barnett brings so much to the table, has so much to contribute to the government that she is going to be appointed a Senator to represent the United Democratic Party in the Senate of Belize. Mr. Steve Duncan is being made a United Democratic Party Senator. One of the most brilliant attorneys in this country, Mr. Aldo Salazar is being made a Senator to represent the United Democratic Party. From the north we’re going to appoint another lady, another young lady…a little younger than Carla who is also a young lady, and that is Ms. Francine Burns who is a bright young spark and attorney at law. The last Senator-designate couldn’t be here this morning because he is the current principal of the Corozal Creek High School in the Toledo District. He is Mr. Macario Coy.”

Senator Godwin Hulse rounds off the six. Of note is that former Senators and Ministers Charles Gibson, Lisel Alamilla and Joy Grant did not make the cut nor did Juliet Thimbrel or Geraldo Sosa. Former U.D.P. Freetown aspirant Lee Mark Chang has been named President of the Senate.

  1. Ricky Malthus says:

Where is the logic to have unelected senators who merely rubber stamp what the prime minister undemocratically mandates?. If all these people are so smart, capable and competent show us, show the world how to create meaningful jobs which will improve the economy. Let them walk the walk on providing freedom and liberty to the masses of know-nothing Belizeans ; let them bring about meaningful changes. Let’s bet that it will be the same old blah, blah, blah. Belizeans are such suckers.
