‘Sedi’ Elrington Praised as Minister of Foreign Affairs

Dean Barrow

Where controversial Wilfred Elrington is concerned, the Prime Minister had nothing but praise for his intellect and performance as Foreign Minister. He did concede, though, that there is disquiet in certain sectors of society, likely because Elrington speaks the truth rather than the politically palatable.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“Some of the criticisms of the honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs…I would admit I would allow insofar as they relate to form – I would not make one concession insofar as they relate to substance – and I prefer substance over form any day. The dilemma is this. Sedi is a truth-teller. He is a plain speaker. I think that’s one of the reasons he’s so admired and respected abroad. He is also clearly a successful politician. In his constituency he was able for the second time to withstand the onslaught of the Smith brothers, but he perhaps makes too much of a separation between politics as politics and the business of his remit at the Foreign Ministry so that there are times when Sedi puts things in a way that’s not calculated to win him any points from certain sections of the public. I’ve asked Sedi and I think I’m supported in this by the Cabinet…not to be like a certain famous or notorious figure locally who said leaders have to lie. But I’ve asked him to bear in mind whenever he is making his public pronouncements the fact that if we can avoid controversy we ought to, but I cannot go beyond that, because I insist – and this is a conviction, indeed a knowledge that I will take to the grave…in substance he is an excellent, first class Foreign Minister.”

some of us got to get ready to own a Guatemalan Passport. That idiot will give away Belize…

Once again let me say. Guatemala wants Belizean TERRITORY. Not Belizeans. Guatemala will not give us passports. We will need to get Mexican passports as they are more sympathetic to our plight, and we all know that Mexico and Guatemala are like oil and water. A past Guatemalan president once said that after taking over Belize, they will need to increase the size of the cemetery to accomodate the Belizeans standing in the way,
