Wilfred Elrington Says Electors Have Green-lighted going to the ICJ
Wilfred Elrington, who finished the term prior to elections as Minister of Foreign Affairs, was one of the winners in the closely contested Pickstock division. Elrington won by seventy-eight votes in 2015 which is four votes less than he got in 2012 against Doctor Francis Smith. Elrington weathered significant attacks for his handling of the ongoing Guatemala territorial claim and possible journey to the I.C.J. At the post-election press briefing on Thursday, he told News Five that as far as he’s concerned, the election results are a green light clearing the way to the I.C.J.
Wilfred Elrington, Victorious in Pickstock
“This election in my mind was a kind of referendum. The People’s United Party made it clear that they were saying no to the ICJ. The populace made it clear that they did not want that position. They want the position of the UDP and so they brought us back into government. In my mind that gives us a mandate to continue with that program to do the educational component of it so that when the matter is formally put to our people as an issue they will be properly informed and will be able to make a decisive decision. I am convinced that the Belizean people want to end the dispute. I’m also convinced that most of the leadership in the People’s United Party want it to be ended. They are the ones who orchestrated it for us to reach this point where we decided we will go to the ICJ. Regretfully Francis was never able to make a decision on the matter. He was always waffling and baffling and talking about consulting, and then when he finally took a position he took the position of the people who are least informed in his Party and those who are in fact surrounding him. I think that is a wrong turn in the road but I think they will correct it later on and go back to the position of going to the ICJ.”
You should be executed for traitor, why doubt of our sovereignty and put it in hands of people who don’t live here. The OAS is also a vampire, they survive of this type of chaos, they feel strong by making the people feel weak.
“F” YOU ERLINGTON !!!
WE WILL NOT GO TO THE ICJ, NEVER, WE ARE AN INDEPENDENT NATION, AND BETTER YOU AND YOUR GUATEMALAN ASSOCIATES GET USED TO THAT.
WE AS BELIZEANS MUST STAND FIRM AND DEFEND THIS COUNTRY. YOUR CHILDREN AND GRANDS NEED THE LAND, YOU GIVING THE LAND TO GUATEMALA. ALL THOSE NEWLY SWORNED IN THAT VOTED FOR YOUR RED PARTY WILL GET LAND, THE LAND THAT BELIZEANS NEED AND CANNOT GET.
LATER YOUR CHILDREN WILL BE KART PUSHERS TO THESE SAME ALIENS THAT THIS COUNTRY IS BRINGING IN FOR A STUPID VOTE !!!
I SPEAK SPANISH, I DON`T KNOW ABOUT THOSE THAT VOTED FOR YOU AGAIN !!!
That is not true Sir, Electors vote for a government. When it comes to ICJ its different. I voted for the government in power but it doesn’t mean I will vote yes in a referendum.
This guy gets it wrong again! I am sure the majority of Belizeans (red and blue) would not vote for this ICJ crap!
Why would we relinquish or rights to a few that have no vested interest in Belize?
Mr. Elrington, Do not speculate what the people are thinking. The people voted UDP in the government but it does not mean you will all do the decisions by yourself especially the stupid Guatemalan claim. You, the government, should consult us. Dont forget, we can vote you out next 5 years.DO NOT FORGET THAT!! I HOPE CHANNEL 5 brings out these comments to him. stop being a stupid Elrington. WE HATE YOUR CHOICE OF WORDS AND DECISIONS!!!!
That beard is getting to him. it definately not making him wiser.
