Mother Who Burned Son’s Hand Given Suspended Sentence
A single mother of five children, Odette Lambey, who was accused of placing the hand of her five year old son over a flaming stove causing him to sustain second degree burns, was sentenced on Tuesday. Lambey pleaded guilty to Grievous Harm but was spared jail time and instead the Chief Magistrate, imposed a nine month suspended sentence. Back in October 2014, she admitted to committing the act because she was depressed when she caught her son playing with a lighter attempting to set the curtain on fire. The aggravating factor coming out of Lambey’s case is that she did not take the child to seek medical attention and it was not until three days later, that a police officer took the child to the hospital. The Chief Magistrate accepted Lambey’s guilty plea and heard mitigation plea on her behalf from two family members and a friend. Cynthia Martinez told the court that Lambey was depressed at the time. Since the incident, Lambey has been suffering from a heart condition which sent her to the hospital for a period of time. Her heart condition caused her stress and fatigue.
