Wilfred Elrington Says He Won Because Politics is Local

Earlier in our newscast we showed you Wilfred Elrington’s conviction that the election result is a green light to the ICJ. That remains to be seen, but based on the results the indication is that Elrington certainly suffered no ill effects from the onslaught over the Guatemalan issue. Elrington had been predicting victory even under attack. He told us he was able to do so because he knew that in the end, politics is, for the most part, local.

Wilfred Elrington, Victorious in Pickstock

Wilfred Elrington

“You want to know how I knew that? I knew that because the media did not vote and neither did my detractors. So I did not have to worry about what the media was broadcasting and I did not have to worry about what people like COLA were saying. What I had to concentrate on was what my constituents were saying. Over the last three and a half years that we have been in government for the second term…we have never given so much assistance to the people in the history of this country as we were able to give over the last three and a half years.”

“Would you have expected perhaps a larger margin of victory?”

Wilfred Elrington

“I have come to realize that habits die hard and the people of the Pickstock division have historically been PUPs. It was for the first time that I went in there seven and a half years ago that we won it. So a lot of them are PUPs almost from birth, and it is very hard to change them. So they find themselves in a conflicted position where they like what I’m doing, they respect me, they like me personally but they also have this almost primordial attachment to the PUP and I think that explains this situation where sometimes they vote for you, sometimes they vote against you. I think that they have not been able to sever the relation which they had with the old Party.”
