Wilfred Elrington Blames Media for Guatemala Situation

Wilfred Elrington

During the manifesto launch Minister of Foreign Affairs Wilfred Elrington was also put on the spot where the seemingly heightened Belize/Guatemala territorial dispute is concerned. Elrington, quite amazingly, blamed the media for the Belize/Guatemala issue, claiming that the wider public is not really interested in it.

Wilfred Elrington, U.D.P. Candidate, Pickstock

“It is my perception that the Belize-Guatemala issue that is being dealt with at this time is really one of those creations of the media; it is not anything that the public in fact has really dealt with an interest in. It is a pet issue for a certain section of the media. And really when you listen to the pronouncement of even the leaders of the People’s United Party, the last pronouncements that they have made, they’ve said absolutely nothing about it. I don’t even know if they have mentioned it in their manifesto this time. So it is really not in my view an issue of the moment, but we have dealt with it here in the manifesto very clearly. It says, “Securing our territory and expanding diplomacy. Firstly and fundamentally under the U.D.P. government, there have been significant strides in promoting Belize’s territorial sovereignty and the peaceful resolution of the longstanding territorial dispute with Guatemala. The U.D.P. continues to utilize all diplomatic means to bring a resolution to this protracted matter. The government continues to assert Belize’s national sovereignty and pledges to the Belizean public that it will use every means available first with diplomacy and with a determined strategy that our security forces will remain alert and vigilant in ensuring that our national territorial land and sea are free of incursions.” I will simply end by saying that if you look at the most recent book produced by Insulza, former Secretary General of the Organization of American States, he stated that the achievement of the U.D.P. in relation to the signing of the Special Agreement in 2008 was the most significant achievement made ever in the dispute between Belize and Guatemala.”

There is nothing amazing about this.

As any professional thief knows from their blood oath, an effective defense is to blame someone else, as long as you don’t rat out your fellow thieves.

Clearly the media, particularly ch5 caused the whole problem with Guatemala.

Dammit Jules, we could talk about this all day, but my conclusion is the same, your fault.

  2. Primary Thief, Ali BaBarrow says:

If the media did not interfere with Guatemalan government thieves negotiating a settlement with Belizean government thieves, this whole matter would have been resolved in my first year as PM.

Just because the media reports facts does not mean they understand facts. The average citizen cannot understand the facts, so why is media reporting facts?

The media needs to stay focused on sexy, UDP sexy.

State Department business is the most difficult office , you have to please everyone and get the best deal that everyone can live with. Opponents who know this attack Sedi as a sign of weakness. But he is right Diplomacy and political solution are our strongest weapon and only solution. When Pilate was asked to prosecute Jesus, he used diplomacy. Even bitter enemies, the Jews and Palestinians use diplomacy and politics, and they are criticized by their own people. In the absence of diplomacy, you see what happens murder, death, destruction. Where do you think Belize will stand with a military solution. Wake Up.
