Employee of Elections & Boundaries Office Assaulted

Josephine Tamai

That female officer, we are told, has recorded a statement with Benque Viejo Police.  Meanwhile, in Belize City, a similar incident occurred two hours earlier.  According to the Chief Elections Officer, they also came under attack sometime around eight o’clock when their Lumber Yard office was reportedly egged.  She also claims that a suspected grenade may have been lobbed on the compound.

“It was when she came outside to lock the office when she was leaving that she saw a group of persons outside and those persons, one of them assaulted her.  She was hit in the face, and for me that is very disturbing.  I want to say and I want to make a stand because for us as public officers we are there to do our jobs.  We have to ensure this process works.  And yes, we are working beyond normal working hours.  Well as recent as this morning she was still at the police station when I spoke to her and yes she’s making a report because as officers we have to protect ourselves.  Many people don’t understand what it is that registering officers and assistant registering officers and officers on a whole for Elections and Boundaries Department go through.  We have to do our jobs.  People complain and say you’re doing certain things and that is not the case and it is very disturbing.  And I will go farther to state that it’s not the only incident we had.  At our Lumber Yard office here in Belize City, last night again, the staff heard a noise about eight o’clock in the night.  When they came outside they saw egg being thrown at the door, they took it as nothing.  When they got back to the office this morning, it was then that they realized that an object was thrown as well.  We know that we have persons or cameras that recorded whatever happened.  The police went in, they looked at the situation.  Actually our services are temporarily postponed at present because you know you have to cordon off the area to look into this incident because the police are saying it’s a suspected grenade that was thrown at one of our offices.  Again, I will say, as a department, as public officers we cannot stand for that.  That is not what we’re required of us.”

Police now confirm that the projectile was in fact a confetti device and not a grenade.
