CWU President Says Bank is Disrespectful

Audrey Matura-Shepherd

Matura-Shepherd says that the Bank is plain disrespectful towards the workers and is holding them to ransom unwilling to negotiate. Aside from the exit package, there is the issue of the CBA that the workers want concluded before the bank leaves Belize.

Audrey Matura-Shepherd, President, C.W.U.

“We tried to start negotiations because at first they didn’t even want to acknowledge that we sent them a proposal for the exit package. There were two things we wanted to negotiate. Two major changes in the CBA and the exit package because now the bank is closing down for good and these people won’t have a job. When they made sacrifices for the past three, four, five years, it was with the view that after they make all these sacrifices, this company will continue. And so they are making the sacrifice to make the company remain viable. But the fact that they have bad management and the company cannot remain viable; it should not be the penalty that the workers suffer. So now that they have realised that they cannot manage and the bank will close, the workers are saying okay, we want you all to negotiate with us in good faith because you are exiting, you are leaving here forever. And I’m sure the customers of the bank will tell you it’s not as though the bank is calling them and saying do you want to move over to the other bank. They are just doing it.  In the case of the workers, they are not even moving them over to the other bank. They are leaving them without a job. It is as simple, as that; they are jobless.”
