Chief Elections Officer Speaks on Election List

Josephine Tamai

While the BPP has lashed out against the Elections and Boundaries Department concerning its tardiness in distributing the voters list, Tamai told the media this morning that the revision of that list is a monthly exercise.  In fact, she says that a digital copy of the list had been forwarded to the organization’s headquarters in Belmopan, ahead of a physical release.

Josephine Tamai, Chief Elections Officer

“This is a process that is ongoing every single month.  For some reason we find that whenever an election is being called it is only then that persons are interested in terms of looking at the lists.  But these lists are approved every single month.  The list that we are utilizing at this point is the same list that exists every single month. It’s nothing new. We’re always prepared.  We have been preparing even before an election date was announced because we got the sense that elections would have been called at any point in time.  So we had to ensure that we were ready at any point in time.  So we started preparing from very early and, as I said, when the date was announced it was only then that we realized okay, we only have a short period of time to get things done.  So we ensure that we got adequate staffing at that point in time, get our supplies together, get our lists out because we know persons are waiting.  We have to do packaging of our supplies.  We have several things that we have to do.  You all are aware that the transfer period recently ended so we had been working long hours even before then.  A transfer actually physically dictates that you transfer person’s records physically, hence one of the reasons why our officers remain in the offices.  You have to ensure that you can account for every single record card for every single person you have on your voters list.”
